In a historic and culturally rich ceremony held on Monday, May 26, 2025, at Yonibana Town in the Tonkolili District of Sierra Leone, prominent journalist and senior media practitioner Richmond B. Tholley was officially crowned as Ceremonial Chief of Yoni Chiefdom.

The renowned journalist was crowned along with the Chiefdom’s Paramount Chief and other sub-Chiefs. He now bears the revered traditional title Pa Kapr Thomoh Yoni Kapen, a name that will echo with pride and legacy across the region.

He’s the seventh (7) from his family to hold the title, replacing his late grandfather, who was the last to hold the title.

The coronation, attended by traditional leaders, community stakeholders, media colleagues, and residents from across the chiefdom and beyond, was a vibrant display of Sierra Leone’s enduring cultural heritage. Clad in traditional regalia and adorned with symbolic beads and emblems of authority, Pa Kapr Thomoh Yoni Kapen stood as a unifier, a bridge between the old and the new.

Before his crowning, Tholley was already a household name in media circles known for his commitment to truth, professionalism, and a strong sense of responsibility to the public. His work as a senior reporter, producer, and presenter has inspired many young journalists nationwide.

His ascension to ceremonial chief is not only a personal achievement but also a testament to his deep-rooted connection with the people of Yoni. It is a recognition of his integrity, humility, and service to community development.

As Ceremonial Chief, Pa Kapr Thomoh Yoni Kapen is expected to use his influence to promote peace, preserve tradition, and champion community development. His coronation marks the beginning of a new era where culture and communication will be harmoniously blended to foster progress.

In his post-coronation remarks, the new chief assured his people that his new role would not hinder his work in journalism but rather enhance it. “I will continue to be the voice of the voiceless,” he said. “I will use both the traditional platform and the media platform to advocate for my people, share our stories, and preserve our values.”

This dual role positions Pa Kapr Thomoh Yoni Kapen as a unique figure in Sierra Leone’s sociopolitical landscape. His background in media gives him a powerful tool for amplifying community issues, promoting cultural education, and influencing national conversations on development, peacebuilding, and heritage.

He is expected to initiate programs that blend civic education, traditional leadership, youth mentorship, and cultural revitalisation, especially at a time when traditional institutions are seeking to remain relevant and impactful in modern governance.

As Tonkolili celebrates the crowning of this distinguished son of the soil, all eyes will be on how he balances the pen with the sceptre and how he uses his voice not just to report the news but to make news that transforms lives.

Locals have congratulated Pa Kapr Thomoh Yoni Kapen, formerly Richmond B. Tholley on this noble honour. They believe that the journey ahead is long, but with your wisdom, strength, and vision, the future of Yoni Chiefdom looks ever brighter.
