The Chief Minister of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, has announced that the government has constructed more than 1,500 classrooms, benefiting approximately 1.5 million pupils.
The announcement was made during the 2nd Annual National Presidential Town Hall, held in Kenema on June 17, 2025, where citizens gathered to engage with government officials on pressing national issues.
Dr. Sengeh emphasized the government’s commitment to improving educational quality by employing more teachers and increasing their salaries by 70%. He highlighted that every government school now receives textbooks, ensuring that students have the necessary resources for their studies.
In response to a surge in student enrollment, the government has also established new institutions of higher learning. These include the Eastern Technical University in Kenema, Milton Margai University, Kono University, and midwifery schools located in Makeni, Bo, and Kenema, confirming that the expansion of technical and vocational institutions is underway to further support diverse educational needs.
To bolster higher education access, he revealed that a student loan scheme has been introduced for postgraduate students, with plans to extend this support to undergraduates in the future.
Dr. Sengeh also noted the government’s initiative to encourage girls in STEM fields through grant-in-aid programs, reinforcing the importance of gender equality in education.
This year’s Special Edition Town Hall served as a platform for unfiltered dialogue between the government and citizens, addressing key topics such as governance, health, energy, agriculture, and social protection.
