Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, says the city’s cable car project is ready to take off, but the Sierra Leone government is yet to give its final approval.
In a recent interview, she said the company responsible for the project has already met with Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, the Ministry of Finance, and other key government officials. According to her, those meetings were positive, and by December, they left with the understanding that the government would write back and confirm the go-ahead.
That hasn’t happened yet.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr explained that the project is backed by the French government and supported by the French Treasury. She said it’s not a request for Sierra Leone to spend its own money the deal is a 20-year loan at 0.7%, which she described as highly affordable. What’s missing now is just the government’s agreement.
“We’re not asking the government to put money in it,” she said. “All we need is a signature.”
The Mayor also pointed out that the cable car talks have been going on for more than two years. She said her team will keep reminding the government, but the delay is now holding the project back.
The cable car is expected to improve movement in Freetown, especially for people living in the hill communities. Mayor Aki-Sawyerr said there is strong support from the French side and that the company is ready it’s now just waiting on the Sierra Leone government to officially say yes.
