The Independent Media Commission (IMC) held a formal hearing regarding complaints against Radio Democracy 98.1 FM, following controversial remarks made during the station’s flagship programme, ‘Good Morning Salone,’ aired on 19th May 2025.
The focus of the hearing was on allegations of tribal comments made by a guest affiliated with the All People’s Congress (APC).
Dr. Julius Spencer, the Board Chairman of Radio Democracy, acknowledged during the hearing that the broadcast contained errors, describing it as a mistake on the part of the station.
He affirmed that management has implemented internal measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, including enhancing editorial oversight and providing additional training for presenters.
In a plea for support, Dr. Spencer urged the IMC to assist media institutions with targeted training aimed at aligning programming with best practices as outlined in the IMC Act of 2020 and the Media Regulations of 2022.
The hearing was chaired by Commissioner Sidikie Tommy Esq., with IMC Chairman Joseph E. Kapuwa Esq. also in attendance. Commissioner Tommy stressed the importance of media institutions exercising caution when handling sensitive topics, particularly when political representatives are involved. He asserted the responsibility of media houses to maintain national peace and cohesion.
The IMC reiterated that presenters and producers must take control of their content, warning against the acceptance of divisive rhetoric disguised as political commentary. The Committee admitted that such practices are unacceptable and violate professional standards.
The Commission called on all media houses to recognize their significant responsibility in shaping public opinion and fostering national unity, expressing continued commitment to upholding Sierra Leone’s democratic values by ensuring that the media promotes peace, unity, and professionalism in its broadcasts.
Moving forward, the IMC poised plans to engage with media institutions nationwide to reinforce ethical broadcasting standards, ensuring that the media serves as a platform for unity, development, and informed public discourse.
