The Ministry of Health and Sanitation is preparing to launch a new initiative called the “Health Osusu” aimed at helping citizens save money to cover their healthcare needs.

Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, shared the details during the second edition of the Presidential Town Hall 2025 held in Kenema. He explained that the government wants to reduce its reliance on donor funding for healthcare services. With many development partners now unable to provide further financial support, the Ministry is seeking ways to generate its funds.

Dr. Demby said donors often give money with specific conditions on who to help and what to fund, which limits the country’s control over its health system. The new “Health Osusu” plan will encourage people to save small amounts regularly, which the government will manage. When someone falls sick, the collected funds will help cover their medical expenses.

The Minister noted that while not everyone gets sick at the same time, this collective savings approach can provide financial support for those in need. He also mentioned that the government plans to improve how it uses available resources to make healthcare services more efficient and effective.

Dr. Demby described the move as turning the challenge of reduced donor funding into an opportunity for Sierra Leone to better manage its own healthcare system.

The “Health Osusu” initiative aims to give citizens more control and security when it comes to paying for health care in the future.
