Police in Sierra Leone have stopped a container carrying a large amount of illegal drugs at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Freetown.
The seizure was made on Wednesday, 22nd May 2025, by the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU).
According to Awoko Newspaper, officers moved in after receiving a tip about a suspicious 40-foot container. It was listed as holding Amazonian goods. But during inspection, police found eight bags marked “Property of Amazon” and 17 more bags filled with kush, a strong and dangerous drug. They also found several clear plastic bags believed to contain raw materials used to produce kush.
Deputy Head of TOCU, Detective Superintendent Abass Y. Bangura, said they acted quickly after receiving reliable information. The drugs were stopped before they could be moved or sold.
No arrests have been made yet. However, the police say they are actively working to find out who owns the container and who else is linked to the shipment. The investigation is ongoing and more people may be involved.
This seizure comes at a time when drug use is increasing across the country. Young people are the most affected. Health workers and community leaders have raised concerns about how drugs like kush are leading to mental health issues, more crime, and the spread of diseases such as HIV/AIDS.
While some awareness campaigns and support programs are in place, the illegal drug trade continues to cause harm in many areas.
Police say more details, including the estimated street value of the drugs, will be shared as the case develops.
