On May 13, 2025, Inspector Abubakarr Kargbo testified before Magistrate Patrick Fofanah, presenting key evidence in the murder trial of journalist Samuel Brima Mattai, who was killed at the Voice of Peace and Development Radio (VOPAD) station in Kissi Town, Waterloo. The evidence, marked as exhibits D1 to D7, includes crucial communications between the accused parties.
Joseph Mendel Lamin, known as “Manager Dust,” along with bike rider Morlia Kamara and the driver Umaru Timbo , made their fourth court appearance before Magistrate Sahr Kekura at Pademba Road Court No. 1. They face charges of conspiracy to commit murder and murder, under the Persons Act of 1861, as amended by the Abolition of Death Penalty Act 2021.
Inspector Kargbo confirmed that the materials were forwarded to the Cyber Unit and the Law Officers’ Department for further examination. He detailed that on February 7, 2025, he conducted an interview with the first accused in Krio, with responses documented in English. The accused confirmed the accuracy of the content and signed with his thumbprint, while Inspector Kargbo recorded the session with a colleague as a witness.
Inspector Kargbo, along with Inspector K. Matthew, also interviewed the second accused that same month, charging him with conspiracy to commit murder. This interview was similarly conducted in Krio, translated into English, and signed by the accused with his thumbprint.
The case has been adjourned to Tuesday, May 20, 2025, for further hearings.
