Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh has said he may consider running for higher national office in the future but only after completing his current role and if he believes he has truly served the country well.
In a message shared online, Dr. Sengeh reflected on his work so far and said that once he finishes his time as Chief Minister, he would think about seeking a higher position in government. But that decision, he said, would only come if he felt he had met a certain standard.
He explained that if he could be even “half as good” as Dr. Sir Milton Margai, Sierra Leone’s first Chief Minister then he would consider taking that step.
Dr. Sir Milton Margai later became Sierra Leone’s first Prime Minister and played a key role in leading the country to independence. Dr. Sengeh referenced him while reflecting on the standard of leadership he hopes to achieve.
For now, however, he made it clear that his focus is firmly on the present. He stated that he is committed to delivering for the people of Sierra Leone, working with President Julius Maada Bio, and supporting the goals of the SLPP.
He also spoke about the government’s focus on fairness and inclusion. He pointed to ‘Radical Inclusion’ as an approach the team is using to make sure no citizen is left out of the country’s progress.
Dr. Sengeh closed his message by saying that the team is working together to build a more just and equal society.
This is the first time the Chief Minister has openly spoken about the possibility of seeking higher office, though there are rumors of him wanting to contest for the flagbearer position of the SLPP.
