The Minister of Transport and Aviation, Alhaji Fanday Turay, has clarified the government’s position on the controversial $25 security fee at Freetown’s airport and provided an update on the new ferry service.
Speaking to in a recent interview, Minister Turay explained that the security fee, implemented by private firm Securiport, falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, not his ministry.
“The $25 fee is part of an agreement between the Government of Sierra Leone and Securiport,” Turay said. “The Ministry of Internal Affairs oversees the monitoring and management of these funds.”
Meanwhile, the minister confirmed that the new ferries, intended to improve maritime transport between Freetown and Lungi, are operational despite initial technical issues.
“There was a problem with one of the ramps, which was not the correct type,” he said. “However, the management and owner have been cooperative, and we are working to resolve the matter.”
Turay assured the public that the ferries will meet safety and accessibility standards once fully operational. The new vessels are expected to ease traffic congestion and provide a faster alternative for travelers.
The government anticipates that the ferry service will significantly improve transportation along key routes, particularly the busy Freetown-Lungi corridor.
