A group of women and children, said to be the wives and children of sacked Koidu Holdings workers, staged a protest after their husbands were dismissed from the company.
The women are demanding that Koidu Holdings pay the final payments still owed to the dismissed workers.
The protest follows the dismissal of over 900 mine workers, many of whom were reportedly let go without receiving their full benefits. The affected families say they have been left without income or support since the termination.
Before stepping out, the women wrote a letter to the Inspector General of Police. In the letter, they requested permission to hold a peaceful protest. They said their demonstration was in support of their husbands and also echoed the stand of the First Lady of Sierra Leone, who earlier showed concern for the treatment of the workers.
During the protest, the women moved through the town using megaphones to make their voices heard. They shared how their families are struggling, with many saying they are unable to provide for their homes or send their children to school because of the unpaid money.
The protest remained peaceful. No violence or disorder was reported as the women expressed their frustration in a calm and organized way.
So far, there has been no official response from Koidu Holdings regarding the protest or the unpaid money the women are demanding.
