The Southern Regional Executive elections for the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) have been extended to continue today following disruptions during voting.

Dr. Prince Alex Harding, who was in charge of overseeing the election process as the Returning Officer and is also the SLPP Chairman, has been relieved of his duties after allegations of rigging emerged. Witnesses say Dr. Harding voided 61 votes cast for the Financial Secretary position, raising concerns among delegates who were casting their votes.

In response, a new four-person committee led by Ismatu Sidibay-Sesay, Regional Trustee for the Western Region, has been appointed to oversee the remaining elections. Other members of the committee include Ambassador Abu Bakarr Karim, also a Regional Trustee for the Western Region, Patrick Gibrilla, Deputy Young Generation Leader, and Augustine J. J Tommy, National Auditor.

The elections, originally scheduled for June 19, were paused and are set to resume at 12pm on June 20 in Bo. The National Secretary General of the SLPP, Umaru Nape Koroma, has called on all Southern regional delegates to take part and vote for their preferred candidates.

In a public notice, Koroma asked delegates to exercise their rights during the remaining voting process.

The elections will continue at the same venue in Bo, where delegates are expected to complete the process peacefully.
